Free alt text checker
Enter a page. The tool lists the images that have no alt attribute, so you can describe them for people using screen readers and for search engines.
What this tool checks
- Counts the images on the page
- Lists images with no alt attribute
- Counts images with an empty alt, which is correct for purely decorative images
Why it matters
Alt text describes an image for people who cannot see it and for search engines. An empty alt is fine for decoration. A missing alt attribute is what to fix.

How to read your result
- Missing alt means the image has no alt attribute. This is what to fix.
- Empty alt is correct for decoration, such as a divider.
- The list shows image addresses, up to 30.
- Background images set in CSS are not counted.
Common problems and fixes
- A meaningful image has no alt. Add a short description of what the image shows.
- Alt text stuffed with keywords. Write it for a person who cannot see the image.
- A logo or icon with no alt. Describe it briefly, for example the company name.
- A decorative image. Use an empty alt so screen readers skip it.
Questions about the alt text checker
What is alt text?
Alt text is a short description of an image in the page code. Screen readers read it aloud and search engines use it to understand the image.
What is the difference between missing and empty alt?
Missing means there is no alt attribute at all. Empty means alt is set to nothing, which tells screen readers to skip a decorative image.
How long should alt text be?
Keep it short and plain, describing what the image shows and why it is there.
Can SEOSage check this across my site?
Yes. It lists images missing alt text across a crawl, and after you fix one it re-checks and tells you Fixed, Still missing or Image removed.
