What the Rank tracking page shows

  • Summary: The average position and how it changed, how many keywords improved, how many dropped and how many are in the top 10
  • Position over time: A chart of the average position for each day. A lower number is a better rank, so it sits higher on the chart
  • Where your keywords rank: How many keywords are in the top 3, at 4 to 10, at 11 to 30 and at 31 or lower, next to the same counts for the period you compare with
  • Biggest gains and drops: The five keywords that moved up the most and the five that dropped the most (keywords with at least 10 impressions)
  • Keyword table: Position, the earlier position, the change, a small trend line, clicks and impressions. Filter by Improved, Dropped, New or Lost, search, and sort
  • Time frame and comparison: 7 days, 28 days, 3 months, 6 months or dates you pick. Compare with the period just before, the same days a year ago, or dates you pick
  • Country and device: Filter everything on the page by country, and by desktop, mobile or tablet
  • Crawl markers: Each crawl of the site is a dashed line on the chart, green when the site got healthier and red when it got worse. Hover a line to read what changed
  • Export: CSV, Excel or PDF. Excel and PDF carry the SEOSage logo, or your own logo and company name if White-label reports is on in Settings

What it does not do

Rank tracking uses the average position that Google Search Console reports for your own site, for web search only. It does not look up Google results itself, it does not show other websites, and it does not use a paid rank-tracking data source.

Rank tracking is for keywords your site already gets impressions for. A keyword shows a position only if Google had impressions for it in that time frame. Otherwise the page says No data. Search Console data is about 2 days behind, and the newest days can still change.

Pin the keywords that matter

Pinned keywords stay at the top of the table. This is what happens next:

  • Pin a keyword. Hover a row and press the pin, or type a keyword and press Track. To add many, press Import list and paste them, one per line or separated by commas. You can pin up to 100 for each site.
  • See it on the page. A box lists the pinned keywords that need attention: no longer showing in Google, left the top 10, or dropped 3 or more places.
  • Get an alert. About once a day, while SEOSage is open or running in the menu bar or system tray, it checks your pinned keywords and sends one notification for each site. The same drops are not announced twice. You can turn this off with the box on the page.

How it works in three steps

  1. Connect Search Console.Open Rank tracking in the site menu and sign in with Google. SEOSage can only read your data.
  2. Choose a time frame.Pick the days to look at and what to compare with, then read the gains and the drops.
  3. Pin your keywords.Pinned keywords stay at the top of the table, and SEOSage tells you when one drops.

Questions about this check

What is rank tracking in SEOSage?

A page that shows where your keywords rank in Google and how they moved, using your Search Console data. It shows the average position, the keywords that improved or dropped, and a trend line for each keyword.

Where do the positions come from?

From Google Search Console, with read-only access. SEOSage does not check Google results itself and does not use a paid rank-tracking data source.

Is the position exact?

It is the average position that Google reports for your pages, so it is not the position on one search at one moment. It covers web search only. Search Console data is about 2 days behind, and the newest days can still change.

Can I track a keyword I do not rank for yet?

A keyword needs impressions in Search Console to show a position. If Google has no data for it in that time frame, the page shows No data.

How do the alerts work?

About once a day, while SEOSage is open or running in the menu bar or system tray, it checks your pinned keywords. It compares the last 28 days with the 28 days before, and sends one notification for each site when a keyword drops 3 or more places, leaves the top 10 or is no longer showing. The same drops are not announced twice, and you can turn it off. You can pin up to 100 keywords for each site, and the daily check covers the first 30 you pinned.

Can I export it?

Yes. CSV, Excel and PDF. They follow the filters you have set. The PDF lists the first 150 keywords, and CSV and Excel have the full list.
