UPPERCASE. why are we shouting?

What it flags

  • Uppercase letters: Paths are case-sensitive, so /About and /about can become two pages
  • Underscores: Google reads hyphens as word breaks, not underscores
  • Spaces and repeated slashes: Spaces turn into %20, and // can create duplicate pages
  • Session IDs: A session ID gives every visitor a different address for the same page
  • URLs over 115 characters: Long addresses are harder to read and share
  • Pages 5 or more clicks deep: Pages that take 5 or more clicks to reach from the start page

Good to know

Most of these are notices, not errors. Uppercase, underscores and long URLs are worth fixing on new pages. Changing the address of an old page needs a redirect.

Spaces, repeated slashes and session IDs are warnings, because they can split one page into several addresses.

Questions about this check

What is a good URL structure for SEO?

Short, lowercase addresses with hyphens between words, no session IDs, and important pages that are only a few clicks from the home page.

Are underscores bad in a URL?

Google treats hyphens as word breaks and does not treat underscores that way, so hyphens are the safer choice. SEOSage reports underscores as a notice.

How long can a URL be?

SEOSage flags URLs over 115 characters. It is a guide for readability, not a strict limit.

What does Page is deep in the site mean?

The page takes 5 or more clicks to reach from the start page. Link to it from higher up.

Do uppercase letters in a URL matter?

Paths are case-sensitive, so /About and /about can become two pages. Use lowercase.

Should I change old URLs?

Only if the benefit is clear. If you do, add a redirect from the old address to the new one.
